Vegetarian Hot Dogs: Ranking the Best and Worst in Lee County, FL

If you're looking for the best hot dogs in Lee County, Florida, you've come to the right place. From All Beef Hot Dog to Matt's Red Hots, Baked, Schnapper's Hots, Chicago Dawg House, Skinny Dogz, and Detroit Pizza Joint, there's something for everyone. But what about vegetarians? Finding a delicious and nutritious vegetarian-friendly sausage can be a challenge. From Beyond Meat to Field Roast, Impossible Foods, Morningstar Farms and Tofurky, there are plenty of options to choose from.

But which ones are the best?To answer this question, I gathered an esteemed group of friends (vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores), and even a professional chef, to evaluate 10 brands and varieties of vegetarian hot dogs. We tasted each one and ranked them from best to worst. Here's what we found. At the top of the list was the Ikea veggie sausage. Many noted that it wasn't comparable to regular sausages (an offence that could disqualify them, but again, beggars can't choose), but they appreciated its “taste of meat and smoke”.

With the highest rating in the group, all participants noticed that the sausage tasted similar to that of a real sausage. Tied for fifth place were the hot dogs from Lightlife (the brand that makes the Smart Dogs that I remember eating in my youth) and Very Good Butchers, a newer brand whose hot dogs are made with ingredients such as white beans, onions and wheat gluten. The Lightlife dog hit the nail on the head when we compared it to real sausages. The MorningStar dog also fits perfectly in a bun, so if hidden with ingredients, it could convince even the most devoted carnivores that this dog is no joke. At the lower end of the spectrum was Impossible Foods' vegetarian sausage. It had a texture similar to that of a hot dog but overall it looked like a failed attempt to imitate a barbecue staple.

Very few sausages received as much criticism as the Yeah Dawg brand. The texture was so unpleasant that it was hard to imagine the hot dog as anything other than a reconstituted Thanksgiving log. Overall, our taste test revealed that Ikea veggie sausages were the clear winner. Beyond Meat's bratwurst sausages were also great and could be eaten with roasted peppers. If you're looking for a vegetarian-friendly sausage option in Lee County, Florida, these are your best bets!.
